The Minister revealed that the President of the Republic “thought about this initiative for a long time and discussed it with the leaders of the Maghreb countries and their foreign ministers during the various visits they made to our country,” considering that “North Africa and the Maghreb are almost the only region in the world that lacks a mechanism for consultation.” “The President of the Republic insisted on every occasion to create a mechanism to fill this vacuum and make the region’s voice heard in all international and regional forums.”

In this context, Attaf expressed his “regret” that the Maghreb region “includes files that create events in the world, similar to the Libyan file and the Sahel-Sahel region,” but these files – as he said – are “involved by all countries except the countries of the region that are considered concerned with this issue.” “Files first and foremost,” which is a “bitter reality,” he said.

The minister stressed that Algeria, “as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, needs to know the views of its brothers on many of the files presented at the Security Council level, especially those that directly concern the Maghreb countries,” stressing that “coordination with sister countries in the region is first.” than others, because Algeria sees them as members of the same family.”

In this context, Attaf confirmed that the first consultative meeting between the leaders of Algeria, Tunisia and Libya produced “positive results, especially from the political side,” noting that “a meeting like the Tunis summit had never been held before, where the discussion between the leaders of the three sister countries was family-friendly and open.” He was characterized by frankness, which is reflected in the content of the final statement, which culminated in 4 basic files that affect the lives of the citizens of these countries, which are the development of border areas, energy, food security and overcoming the problems of trade exchange,” which, he added, are among “the priorities for joint action between the three countries before The next summit will be held in Tripoli after 3 months.”

Regarding the situation in the Sahel, the minister explained that Algeria “is not passive in the face of what is happening in this region, and it is doing its duty and assuming all its responsibilities to ensure the security and stability of the region.”

In this regard, he continued, “Our country continues consultations on the developments in this region to restore the situation to its correct path,” which is “the political solution for which Algeria has always campaigned to resolve the dilemmas in Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso.”

He stressed that “the deteriorating political and economic conditions in this region require vigilance and intensified efforts.”
