The Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, Karim Bibi Triki, stated that Algeria has made important strides in the path of digital transformation in various sectors and strengthening the infrastructure of the communications network in embodiment of the commitments of the President of the Republic, revealing that 80 percent of citizens have continuous access to the Internet, while 13 million citizens have been registered. The Minister explained, when he appeared today, Monday, as a guest on the First Radio Channel forum, that the number of fixed-line telephone subscribers has moved from 3.5 million households connected to the Internet at the beginning of 2020, to 5.7 million households connected to the Internet in 2024, stressing that the sector’s goal is to reach 6 million connected households. The minister added that the priority of the sector is to modernize the communications network, by disseminating fiber optic technology across the entire national territory, revealing that the number of fixed fiber optic Internet subscribers has increased from 50 thousand subscribers in 2020, to more than one million and 200 thousand subscribers currently across 58 states.

In this context, Tricky added that the dissemination of fiber optic technology allowed for an increase in the speed of fixed Internet flow, noting that the speed of fixed-line Internet for copper cables moved from 2 megabits per second in 2020, to 10 megabits per second currently, as for optical fibers – he adds. The guest of the first radio channel announced a new program that includes various states, targeting 1,400 residential sites, with a population density of less than 2,000 people, saying that “after completing all administrative procedures, they will be connected to the mobile phone network to provide information and communication technology.”

On the other hand, the Minister stated that the number of holders of Algeria Post golden cards has moved from 6 million in 2020, to 13 million holders of this card currently, pointing to the important development in electronic payment operations, saying: “Algerie Telecom in 2021 was recording about 20 thousand transactions.” Electronic payments per month, but currently it records more than 28 thousand electronic payments per day.”

In the same context, Karim Bibi Triki stressed that Algeria Post seeks to improve public service in order to improve public facilities and strengthen the postal network, noting that Algeria Post today counts approximately 4,300 post offices at the national level, and is strengthened annually by 100 additional post offices.

In another context, the Minister touched on the national campaign that was launched to raise awareness of the dangers of using social media, stressing that the goal of this campaign lies in educating civil society about the various dimensions related to the risks that citizens can be exposed to through the use of these platforms.
