Algeria’s only representative in the African Confederation Cup this season, the Ittihad Al-Capital club, fell as a guest of the Libyan club Al-Hilal.
The defending champion of the competition lost by two goals to one, in the fifth round match of the group stage, which was hosted by the “Benina Martyrs” Stadium in the city of Benghazi, eastern Libya, on Sunday.
This is Al-Ittihad’s first defeat this season in the African Confederation Cup, as the team leads its first group with 10 points, two points behind its closest rival, the Egyptian club Modern Future.
The capital club is suffering
The squad of Spanish coach Juan Carlos Garrido recorded its third consecutive loss in all competitions, after the match between Athletic Parado in the Algerian League two weeks ago, which ended with five goals to one, and then the match against USM Khenchela (1-0).
In its confrontation with Al-Hilal, Al-Ittihad repeated the same defensive mistakes it had made recently, which caused it to concede two goals, the first in the 14th minute of the first half, while the second came after the players returned from the half-time break (50 minutes).
While the attackers continued to be absent from scoring, the team was unable to reach the opponent’s net except through midfielder Osama Sheetah.
It should be noted that the strength of USM Algiers in the previous four matches of the African Confederation Cup was that they did not concede goals, as they kept a clean sheet inside and outside the home and scored five full goals.
It is expected that the sons of Sustatra will conclude their journey in the group stage, by hosting the South African club Superspor United, bottom of Group A, on the third of March.
