The President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, highlighted the prominent role played by the press in defending the national interest, during his meeting with directors and officials of some media outlets.
The Presidency of the Republic said in a statement: “Today, the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, received the directors and officials of some national media outlets, where he listened to the professional and social concerns of the media family, noting the prominent role played by the press in defending the national interest.”
The statement added, “The meeting was an opportunity, during which Mr. President was briefed on the proposals of journalism professionals to improve its performance in order to effectively contribute to the national efforts being made in all fields and sectors.” The source concluded that the meeting also discussed in depth various national issues directly related to citizens’ concerns, including regional and international issues.
On the other hand, the Minister of Communication, Mohamed Laqab, had set, following his appointment as head of the ministry, two basic goals for his activity in the ministry, which are to complete the legislative framework governing the sector, as well as building the institutions governing the sector as a second step.
The new Minister of Communications called on all those concerned, including the ministry’s frameworks, directors of public and private institutions, and journalists, to join hands to advance this sensitive sector. Muhammad Laqab praised all the efforts and achievements made by the ministers who preceded him at the head of the ministry, especially those related to the legislative system, such as the organic law related to the media.
The Minister stressed the importance of continuing to complete this system by approving the law related to audiovisual activity and the law on written and electronic journalism, in order to then begin building the institutions regulating the sector, most notably the authority to control the written and electronic press, and then installing a professional ethics committee.
The Minister of Communications also affirmed his conviction that, armed with the strong faith, the confidence of the President of the Republic, and the support he received from the Prime Minister, as well as the components of the sector, the challenge will be lifted and the set goals will be achieved.
