The National Office of Purification: Providing 16 filtration stations with the triple treatment device – Al-Houwar Al-Jazairia
In the medium term, 16 filtration stations under construction will be equipped with a tertiary treatment device that allows for increasing the water capacity destined for reuse in various sectors, according to the National Office for Purification.
These achievements, which fall within the framework of a national plan of action over a period of years under implementation, will allow to enhance the current supply specified at 1.16 billion cubic meters of wastewater with an additional share estimated at 140 million cubic meters / year, noting that the development of these equipment comes in implementation of the comprehensive national strategy. for non-conventional water in order to address water scarcity.
In this context, the National Office for Purification, recalling the instructions of the President of the Republic Abdelmadjid Tebboune during the last of the Council of Ministers related to revitalizing and activating all wastewater filtration plants projects in order to exploit them for irrigation, confirmed that unconventional water such as desalination of sea water and the filtration of wastewater produced by filtration plants They represent “solutions to the necessity of water and food security, as well as the needs of multi-sectoral development, especially the agricultural and industrial sectors.”
In this regard, these interests confirm that the establishment of the tertiary treatment apparatus is translated “in its systemic, organizational, institutional and practical dimensions” and this is through a multi-year national action plan under implementation.
“Maturity studies have been launched, such as the general study for the recycling of filtered wastewater for agricultural and industrial uses,” the same source added, explaining that the goal is “to create a national map for reuse for each hydrographic basin that takes into account the water yield and the orientation and specificities of the region.”
The same source added that a legislative, regulatory and normative arsenal has been developed by the public authorities for this aspect in order to “frame and promote the recycling of filtered waste water for agricultural uses, prevention of health risks and environmental protection.”
An ambitious investment program has been completed in Algeria in the field of purification, which was embodied in the expansion of the existing filtration stations complex to reach more than 200 infrastructures for exploitation and treatment of 1.16 billion cubic meters of wastewater, which corresponds to 17 million residents, according to data from the National Office of Purification.
This complex, which is being expanded, will reach a processing capacity of 2 billion cubic meters in 2030.
This water intake will be placed at the disposal of the agricultural sector for “unrestricted reuse in agriculture, which would cover the irrigation needs of a useful agricultural area estimated at 160,000 hectares,” according to the office.
In this context, the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, had ordered, on Sunday, during a cabinet meeting, “to draw up a plan to generalize seawater desalination plants across the entire coastal strip of the country and to re-move and resuscitate all the suspended projects of wastewater filtration plants across the states, and to put them under exploitation.” To be used in agricultural irrigation instead of groundwater.
