The Ministry of Public Works draws up a work program to optimally handle sand dredging operations from ports – Algerian Dialogue

This came in a speech by Rakhroukh during his supervision, at the Higher School of Mines of Public Works, at the opening of a study day on sand dredging from ports, entitled “Port dredging, stakes and challenges,” in the presence of the Minister of Tourism and Traditional Crafts, Houria Madahi, and the Minister of the Environment and Quality of Life, Najiba Djilali. The Secretary-General of the Ministry of Transport, Jamal al-Din Abdel-Ghani Dridi, as well as the executives of the public works sector and officials of agencies, complexes and companies under guardianship, as well as Studies offices and laboratories.

The Minister explained in his speech that, in accordance with the instructions of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, which he gave during the Council of Ministers held on December 8, regarding the immediate commencement of dredging sand from the depths of small and medium ports, the Ministry, through the General Complex for Marine Works, is working on “ Setting a specific intervention schedule and establishing the necessary mechanisms to follow up the progress of the works.”

He added: “The sector developed a strategy for developing and maintaining port facilities, from which a medium-term work program emerged to optimally handle sand dredging operations from ports.”

This program is based on three basic axes: renewing and strengthening dredging equipment through an investment program to acquire it, valuing national competencies by developing a program to train them and improve their qualification in the field of port dredging, as well as adopting a responsible environmental approach to contribute to preserving the marine environment.

In this context, Mr. Rakhroukh pointed out that at least 34 operations to sweep sand from ports and protection works against the phenomenon of sandblasting have been completed in 25 ports with a volume of more than six million cubic metres.

In addition, many ports have undergone protection works against widowhood, as part of the measures taken to confront this phenomenon, including Ras Jannat in Boumerdes, Tigzirt in Tizi Ouzou Province and Boudis in Jijel, adds the Minister, who pointed out that “many operations are in the process of completion.”

These projects relate to sand dredging in the fishing port and the beautiful Nozha in Algiers, the fishing port of Boudis in Jijel, Palm Beach, La Marsa and Sidi Faraj in Algiers, Zemmouri in Boumerdes, Beni Saf in Ain Timouchent, Sidi Lakhdar and Salamander in Mostaganem, Marsa and Beni Hawa in Chlef, as well as the old port of El Kala in El Tarf.

In addition, sand dredging work will begin in the port of Gouraya in the state of Tipaza, “soon” by the Algerian company for dredging marine and irrigation facilities “Aldiph”, a branch of the General Complex for Marine Works (GTM), which organized this study day on the occasion of the anniversary. 25 to establish it.

Rakhroukh stressed that his ministerial department is committed to “achieving high levels of readiness and innovation by supporting coordination tools between concerned parties, to achieve sustainability and the ambitious goals of this vital sector.”

Algeria has 52 port facilities, including 11 commercial ports, 37 fishing ports and refuges, two fuel ports and two pleasure ports, with 11 ports periodically exposed to the phenomenon of widowhood, the minister adds.

The development of port facilities and their periodic maintenance, such as sand and sediment purification operations, contribute to maintaining their sustainability and their carrying capacity to receive various ships and goods in the best conditions.
