The Minister of Communication, Mohamed Laqab, met on Wednesday evening, in Algiers, with managers and officials of websites registered with the Ministry of Communication, who called on them to make greater efforts in providing meaningful content, according to a statement by the ministry.
The same source explained that the meeting, which took place at the ministry’s headquarters, “falls within the framework of a series of meetings initiated by the Minister of Communication with various officials in charge of media institutions for the purpose of listening to their concerns and expressing their proposals,” to be “followed by similar meetings for officials of the remaining websites.”
By the way, the Minister confirmed that the electronic press file “receives the personal attention of the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, and is one of his most prominent interests.”
He added that the state “needs a strong national media as its primary interface,” stressing that “he seeks, along with all actors in the sector, to outline a solid media policy according to a forward-looking view.”
Laqab also stressed – adding to the statement – “the importance of building strong media institutions based on continuous training and restructuring, especially since the new organic media law stipulates training.”
In a related context, the Minister of Communications reiterated that work is “underway to provide all necessary capabilities to ensure effective training for journalists,” calling on website administrators to “exert greater effort in providing meaningful media content and search for new alternatives for funding.”
Regarding the issue of localization of these websites, the minister explained that proposals regarding this process “are underway with partners to ensure greater protection for these sites.”
In turn, the owners of these websites raised “their concerns and difficulties they face,” appreciating at the same time the positions of the President of the Republic in supporting electronic journalism.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the Minister of Communication called on all journalists and representatives of websites to “participate strongly in the ninth edition of the President’s Award for Professional Journalist, which for the first time addresses three topics with the aim of encouraging participation: “The New Algeria and the Problem of Food and Water Security,” “The New Algeria: Empowering youth energies and creative abilities,” as well as “energy security and its geopolitical dimensions.”
