In interviews with the Israeli media, former Israeli soldiers and security experts warned of the consequences of a ground incursion into the Gaza Strip without study and scrutiny, and demanded that priority be given to the issue of Israeli detainees held by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas).

Israeli Channel 13 quoted former head of the Military Intelligence Research Division, Danny Rothschild, as saying, “The attack must be slow and deliberate with a future vision.”

He also said, “The ground entry will have meaning on the northern front, and we must prepare for that.”

For his part, former Chief of Staff, Reserve General Dan Halutz, warned that entering Gaza would not be a cakewalk, and spoke about the soldiers’ lack of confidence in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, saying, “He poses an existential threat to the State of Israel and is not the right man to lead its government.”

On the other hand, Tamir Hayman, former director of the Institute for National Security Studies, said – during an interview with Channel 12 – that liberating detainees must be among the goals of the war, arguing that this matter carries “strategic and global goals.”

As for the former head of the operations department, he stressed that “one of the most important goals of the military maneuver is to create pressure to liberate the kidnapped,” claiming that “the infrastructure of the Hamas movement cannot be fundamentally dismantled in a short time,” and therefore Israel wants sufficient time during its ground incursion into the Gaza Strip, As the speaker says.

Hadas Chaldron, a woman whose two sons and father were detained in Gaza, spoke to the Israeli media about the necessity of her government’s goal being to release the detainees. She said, “They are planning a ground attack… What is happening here? You pose a danger to our children, for God’s sake.”

Abu Ubaida, spokesman for the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Hamas movement, revealed that there are between 200 and 250 Israeli prisoners in Gaza, including 200 held by the brigades. He also previously challenged the occupation army to go down to the ground and fight face to face instead of bombing civilians.

The occupation army said that the families of 212 people were informed that their children were being held in the Gaza Strip.
