The African Union Commissioner for Peace and Security stresses the need to reform the UN Security Council
The African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Adeoye Bankole, stressed this Monday in Algiers the need to work for the benefit of the African continent and achieve the process of reforming the UN Security Council, praising Algeria’s role in defending Africa’s voice at the global level.
This came in a speech by Mr. Bankole during the opening of the 11th ministerial meeting of the Committee of Heads of State and Government of the Ten African Union for Security Council Reform at the International Conference Center “Abdellatif Rahal”, where he presented several basic requirements to achieve Security Council reform and make Africa “strong and united.”
The speaker praised the role played by Algeria in raising Africa’s voice at the global level, and its support for the demands of reforming the UN Security Council, as well as combating terrorism.
The spokesman criticized the double standards policy pursued by some countries regarding many issues, as is the case in Palestine, expressing that the African Union welcomes every change.
He stressed the need to achieve reform of the United Nations Security Council and accelerate negotiations between African countries in this regard, calling for the implementation of the “Ezulwini Consensus,” the “Sirte Declaration,” and the “Uyala Road Map.”
When speaking about the 2063 Agenda, which Algeria actively participated in designing, Bankole said that “it must include everyone and be effective and for the benefit of Africa,” pointing out that “among our goals is for Africa to be strong, united, and resist at all levels.”
It is noteworthy that the 2063 Agenda includes a number of aspirations, including those related to peace and security, such as “silencing the guns in Africa” and combating terrorism, as well as those related to continental integration, which is one of the African priorities, as well as governance and international representation (the Ezulwini Consensus).
