The inability of the Spanish government, Pedro Sanchez, to resolve the diplomatic crisis with Algeria and with it the “commercial boycott” prompted the companies affected by the Algerian sanctions to sue the government and hold it responsible for the consequences of the losses that it has been counting for a whole year, especially after the glimmer of hope that the High Representative for Foreign Policy, Josep, carried Borrell on his visit to Algeria.
According to local media, Spanish companies have taken steps to establish an association for those affected by the Algerian economic sanctions, which came after the suspension of the Friendship and Good Neighborhood Agreement in March 2022, to demand that the government of Pedro Sanchez compensate those affected by these sanctions, which are due to the government’s unilateral political position related to changing the position of Spain from the Western Sahara file, which Algeria considered a violation of the terms of the friendship treaty.
The founding members of the association intend to claim the state for financial responsibility, compensation for the damages they have suffered as a result of a political decision of the head of government, Pedro Sanchez, and have initiated judicial proceedings, which puts great pressure on the government close to the local elections. The latest statistics of the Institute of Foreign Trade in Spain indicate a continuous increase in the financial losses of companies that relied on the Algerian market to market a significant proportion of their products, amounting to $1.86 billion.
Despite the Algerian economic blockade on Spain, Algeria continues to fulfill its obligations related to gas contracts and to supply the quantities agreed upon before the crisis with Madrid, as Algeria regained the first position as a gas supplier to Spain with a share of 24.2% since the beginning of the year compared to the United States (24.1%) and Russia remains the supplier third with 16.8% of the market, overtaking Qatar and Nigeria.
