Spain announces its joining with South Africa in its lawsuit against the genocide in Gaza
Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albarez confirmed on Thursday that Madrid will join South Africa’s lawsuit before the International Court of Justice against the occupation operations in the Gaza Strip.
Albaris said: “It seems that the application of the International Court of Justice’s precautionary measures towards the entity Israel is still far away.”
The Spanish Foreign Minister added that his country is joining the lawsuit to assist the International Court of Justice.
It is noteworthy that in December 2023, South Africa filed a lawsuit against Israel (the entity) before the International Court of Justice on the grounds of its involvement in “acts of genocide” against citizens in the Gaza Strip.
South Africa submitted to the court an 84-page file, in which it collected evidence of the occupation killing thousands of citizens in the Gaza Strip, and creating conditions “predisposed to inflicting physical destruction on them,” which is considered a crime of “genocide” against them.
The lawsuit filed by South Africa before the International Court of Justice against the occupation received Arab and international support.
Since the initial rulings, several countries have come forward to intervene in the case using a clause in the Statute of the International Court of Justice that allows third parties to join the proceedings.
The first country to submit an official request to the International Court of Justice was Nicaragua, followed by Colombia in April 2024, and then on May 10, 2024, Libya submitted a request to the court to intervene in the case brought against the entity. Chile also announced on 6/2/2024, its accession to the International Court. The suit.
While several countries announced their intention to join South Africa in the lawsuit, they are: the Maldives on May 2024, Egypt on the 12th of the same month, Turkey on the 1st of May, Ireland on the 27th of March 2024, and finally Belgium.
