President Tebboune’s message on the National Day of Memory – Al-Hiwar Al-Jazaeryia

Today, Sunday, the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, sent a message on the occasion of the commemoration of the National Day of Memory commemorating the massacres of May 8, 1945. This reads:

“In the name of God, the most gracious, the most merciful

And prayers and peace be upon His messengers,

fellow citizens, fellow citizens,

On the eighth of May, the Algerian people celebrate the National Day of Memory, which commemorates the heinous massacres that were committed on the same day in the year 1945.

This memory falls within the immortal national days in which this great people made glories and great historical epics that will remain rooted in their conscience, to kindle in our souls brotherhood, strengthen national cohesion and ties to the homeland, and sow in the conscience of the nation pride in the spirit of struggle and resistance that has become entrenched among the people of the glorious land of Algeria and through successive generations. .

Throughout its long history, Algeria has given birth to generations of patriots, resistance fighters and fighters, attesting to its attachment to the ideals of freedom and dignity. The 8th of May 1945, which we worked to dedicate as a national day of memory, is nothing but a bright and strong expression of the nation’s authentic spirit of resistance and its adherence to those noble ideals.

Over the bitter years of the national struggle, the free patriots of the school of the National Movement have been preparing for the hour of decisiveness in which the throats of the revolutionaries resounded in Setif, Guelma, Kharta and other cities, on that fateful day that revealed the horror and horrific massacres committed by the extremist colonialists. The crime against humanity was a starting point for the internationalization of the Algerian cause and its presentation in the corridors of the United Nations … until the spark of armed struggle emanated from the momentum of the desperate national struggle on the glorious 1st of November 1954.

The state, in fulfillment of the enormous sacrifices made by the Algerian people with dignity and honor, is determined in a new, lofty and faithful Algeria to put the file of history and memory in the path in which we can give full transparency, integrity and objectivity, far from any compromises or concessions.

In this context, we look forward to achieving the hoped-for progress in this track in the short term, taking into account the importance of the work entrusted to the joint committee of historians to address all issues, including those related to the recovery of archives, property, remains of resisters, nuclear tests and missing persons.

In this regard, we have affirmed more than once that we are proceeding resolutely in defending the right of the Algerian people by intensifying efforts to address the issue of history and memory with courage and fairness and by giving full clarity to this sensitive file.

As we celebrate the National Day of Remembrance, and as we recall on this occasion with pride the great sacrifices of the Algerian people, we are called upon to make such occasions and the glories preserved by history for the Algerian nation through the stages and eras a precious national heritage, inculcating in the hearts of successive generations loyalty to the righteous martyrs whom we have mercy on. Their pure souls, and on the occasion of the seventy-eighth anniversary (78) of the massacres of May 08, 1945, we turn to their Mujahideen brothers, may God prolong their lives, with greetings and appreciation.
