President of the Republic Abdelmadjid Tebboune offers his deep condolences following the death of academic and linguistic critic Abdelmalek Mortad

On Friday, the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, offered his deep condolences following the death of the academic and linguistic critic, Abdelmalek Mortad, at the age of 88.

President Tebboune explained, in the text of the condolences published by the President of the Republic on his personal account: “Dr. Abdelmalek Mortad, one of the pillars of the Arabic language in Algeria and the educator of generations, passed away next to his Lord on this blessed Friday. The man has passed away, but the legacy remains.” The President of the Republic added, “My deep condolences to the family of the deceased and may he inspire them with patience and solace.” We belong to Allah and to Him we shall return”.

The academic and linguistic critic Abdelmalek Mortad died on Friday at the age of 88. The deceased, who was born in Tlemcen in 1935, is considered one of the most important Algerian and Arab researchers in the fields of study of the Arabic language and literary and intellectual criticism related to it, as he has to his credit dozens of works that have enriched… It contains the Algerian and Arab library, since the sixties of the last century.

The deceased worked – according to what was published by the Algerian News Agency – in his beginnings as a teacher of Arabic literature in primary and secondary schools, then he was appointed as a teacher of Arabic literature at the University of Oran in 1970 after obtaining a doctorate in literature from the University of Algiers with research in “The Art of Maqamat in Arabic Literature,” and in 1983 He was appointed Director of Culture and Media in the state of Oran. In the same year, he obtained a doctorate in literature from the Sorbonne University in Paris, France.

Mortad founded and headed several academic and literary magazines. He was also a member of the Algerian Writers Union. He was also appointed a member of several Arab advisory bodies, such as the advisory board for the magazine “Contemporary Writings” in Beirut, Lebanon in 1988, and the advisory board for the magazine “Aswat” in Sana’a, Yemen, in 1993. And the advisory board of the “Al-Babtain Foundation for Poetic Creativity” in Kuwait in 1997.

In 1987, the deceased received a certificate of appreciation from the President of the Republic, and in 1998 he was appointed a member of the Supreme Islamic Council, and in 1999 he was also appointed a member of the Arab Cultural Academy in Beirut, Lebanon, and in 1998 he was appointed President of the Supreme Council for the Arabic Language, and in 2022 President of the National Council for Arts and Literature.

He also obtained membership in many councils and committees, such as the Practical Council of the National Center for Historical Research, the National Movement, the Scientific Council of the Academy of Western Algerian Universities, and the National Committee for the Reform of Higher Education. At the Arab level, he became famous, especially in recent years, for his membership in the jury of the Arab “Prince of Poets” competition in the Emirates.

The late author wrote dozens of critical and intellectual academic books in various fields of linguistic sciences, such as “The Story in Ancient Arabic Literature,” “The Renaissance of Contemporary Arabic Literature in Algeria,” “The Art of Maqamat in Literature,” as well as “The Algerian Colloquial and its Connection to Classical Arabic,” and “Popular Puzzles.” “Algerian” and “Algerian Popular Proverbs”.

His books also include “The Literary Text from Where to Where,” “Arab Culture in Algeria Between Influence and Influence,” “An Encyclopedic Dictionary of Algerian Revolution Terms,” in addition to “The Arts of Literary Prose in Algeria,” “The Structure of Poetic Discourse,” and “The Arts of Literary Prose in Algeria.” “Ancient Algerian Literature,” “Literature of National Resistance,” “Theory of Rhetoric,” and “Theory of Reading.”
