President of the Republic Abdelmadjid Tebboune appoints Nadhir Al-Arbawi as Prime Minister

On Saturday, the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, terminated the duties of Prime Minister Ayman bin Abdel Rahman, and appointed Nadhir Al-Arbawi to head the government, his successor.

The Presidency of the Republic stated, in a statement, “Based on the Constitution, especially Article 91 (5 and 7) thereof, and in accordance with Presidential Decree No. 21-275 dated Dhul-Qi’dah 19, 1442, corresponding to June 30, 2021, which included the appointment of the Prime Minister, the President of the Republic appointed Abdelmadjid Tebboune.” Nazir Al-Arbawi, Prime Minister. Successor to Ayman bin Abdul Rahman, whose duties have ended.

The presidential statement also included the appointment of Boualem Boualem, advisor to the President of the Republic in charge of legal affairs, judicial affairs, relations with institutions, investigations and qualifications, as acting director of the Office of the Presidency of the Republic, succeeding Nadhir Arbawi, who held the position.

Nadhir Arbawi is the third Prime Minister appointed by the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, since his arrival to power. He is considered a newcomer to Dr. Saadane’s palace, a lawyer, a former diplomat, and an international player for the Algerian handball team.

Al-Arbawi held many diplomatic positions in his career, as he was Algeria’s ambassador to Pakistan, Director General of Legal and Consular Affairs, Director of the Maghreb, and Director of International Economic Relations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

He was also appointed in October 2019 as Ambassador to Cairo and Permanent Representative of Algeria to the League of Arab States. He also held the position of Advisor to Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra, before being appointed in September 2021 as Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Algeria to the United Nations in New York.

During his busy career, Nadir Al-Arbawi was able to achieve several achievements for Algeria, the most recent of which was his ability to obtain the support of Arab countries to nominate Algeria as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council in the period 2024-2025.

Al-Arbawi received the Jerusalem Star Medal in appreciation “for his role and efforts in supporting the Palestinian people and their just and legitimate cause,” from the Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas. He also published several articles in the national and Arab press on regional and international strategic issues.
