Petkovic: The national team’s doors are open to local and professional players
The coach of the first national football team, Bosnian Vladimir Petkovic, gave his second press conference on Sunday since his inauguration two weeks ago.
During which, Petkovic touched on several topics, most notably his options regarding the list of players who will participate in the mini-friendly tournament, which Algeria will organize under the auspices of FIFA between the 21st and 26th of March.
The Desert Warriors will face the Bolivia national team, on Thursday, at ten o’clock in the evening at Nelson Mandela Stadium in the capital, then the South African national team on March 26 at the same stadium and at the same time.
About not calling Mahrez and Slimani
In his response to a media journalist’s inquiry about the absence of the name of Greens captain Riyad Mahrez on the list, Petkovic confirmed that the latter was the one who requested his exemption, preferring to wait before deciding on his future with the national team.
The same question was repeated about the case of the national team’s historic top scorer, Islam Slimani, who is active in the ranks of the Belgian team Michelin (first division).
The answer of the former coach of the Swiss national team was clear, as he described Soleimani as a constant value in the national team, but his current situation with his club requires dispensing with his services in a way that will benefit him in the first place.
Every time he talked about a specific player, Petkovic emphasized that the national team’s doors would remain open to any name, whether from local or professional leagues.
In this regard, the Bosnian indicated that he will undertake a tour that will lead him to inspect several matches from the first professional league championship, in addition to other European leagues, with the aim of selecting some names of dual nationalities capable of strengthening the team later.
About his first matches with the Greens
Vladimir Petkovic stressed the need to prepare for each match awaiting the national team individually, the first of which is the friendly match against Bolivia next Thursday.
He stated on this point by saying: “All the national team’s matches are important. We will study the opponent and explain the tactical approach that I will adopt to the players the day before the match.”
In the same context, Khalifa Jamal Belmadi denied that the issue of fasting would constitute an obstacle to the necessary preparation for confrontations, explaining that he has great experience in dealing with the month of Ramadan due to his cultural background (Bosnian origin and birth), in addition to his previous experiences in the Turkish league and other European leagues where many players are active.
