The Minister of Health, Abdelhak Sayhi, revealed that Algeria currently counts no less than 422 doctors specializing in forensic medicine, noting that this specialty, given its importance, “needs development and support from the Ministry of Health.”
In a speech on the occasion of his supervision of the opening of a scientific day on the “History of Algerian Forensic Medicine,” organized by the Algerian Academy for the Development of Forensic Sciences, this Thursday, the Minister praised “the great role that forensic medicine plays in accompanying many sectors, especially the judiciary and security.” .
In this regard, Sayhi also expressed the Ministry’s readiness to “provide the necessary support” to all specialists in this field at the level of all hospitals, to bring this specialty closer to all courts and other departments.”
On the same occasion, the Minister of Health praised the efforts made by those in charge of the Forensic Medicine Department at Mustafa Pasha University Hospital, which, as he said, has “material and human capabilities that we can be proud of.”
In turn, the President of the Algerian Academy for the Development of Forensic Medicine, Professor Rachid Belhaj, stressed that providing the necessary capabilities and incorporating modern techniques to develop this specialty through digitalization will contribute to preserving the interests of the victims.
For the same purpose, Professor Belhaj stressed the need to train various stakeholders in this field, such as “lawyers and judicial police officers,” proposing “in the future to include forensic medicine in the university training of the legal profession.”
In his speech, the Director General of Judicial Affairs at the Ministry of Justice, Abdul Razzaq bin Salem, said that in recent years “almost complete geographical coverage has been reached in terms of the number of forensic doctors and their geographical distribution throughout the country.”
The forensic services of the scientific police laboratories of the National Gendarmerie and Security have also been strengthened with “modern equipment that enables them, he adds, to “improve their performance and provide a qualitative addition to the judicial files,” noting in the same context that the Algerian experience “proved its worth” during its qualitative participation in complex investigations of a wide dimension. International.
By the way, a certificate of appreciation was awarded by the Council of Arab Health Ministers to Professor Rachid Belhaj for his contributions to the development of the forensic medicine specialty in Algeria.
The families of the three greatest figures in forensic medicine in Algeria were also honoured, who played a major role in forming large numbers of Algerians in this specialty since the seventies: Youssef Mahdi, Mohamed Saleh Aidli, and Mohamed Hanouz.
