Meeting of the Algerian-French Committee for History and Memory…agreement on several points related to archives and property – Algerian Dialogue


The Algerian Committee for History and Memory met with its French counterpart in Constantine, where they agreed on a number of points related in particular to the recovery of archives, looted property, and the remains of resistance men, according to what was reported, today, Tuesday, in a statement by the committee.
The statement explained that the meeting, which took place last Wednesday, was opened by the coordinator of the Algerian committee and the head of the meeting, Dr. Mohamed Lahcen Zghidi, with a welcoming speech to the French counterparts, before starting to discuss the agenda, which included “archives, bibliography, chronology, looted property, and miscellaneous.” .
The same source added that in the field of archives, it was agreed during this meeting, the third between the two parties since the committee was appointed by the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, and his French counterpart, Mr. Emmanuel Macron, in the year 2022, to “hand over two million (2) digitized documents related to the colonial period.” And 29 rolls and 13 records, which constitute 5 meters of the remaining archive of the Ottoman period, that is, before 1830.”
Regarding bibliography, the two sides agreed to “continue completing a joint bibliography of research and printed and manuscript sources about the 19th century in order to publish, digitize and translate the most important ones into Arabic and French and work to recover what can be recovered.” It was also agreed – according to the statement – to “continue completing the chronology of colonial crimes during the 19th century.”
Regarding the looted property, it was also agreed – adds the same source – to “recover all the property that symbolizes the sovereignty of the state belonging to Emir Abdelkader and the leaders of the resistance, as well as the remaining skulls, and to continue identifying the remains dating back to the 19th century, with a census and inventory of the graves of Algerian prisoners and prisoners, with a status… Nominal list.
In the scientific and academic field, the two parties agreed to “implement a scientific exchange and cooperation program that includes Algerian student and research missions to France and French missions to Algeria to view the archive, while removing French administrative obstacles to Algerian researchers.”
In the same context, the meeting led to the two sides agreeing to “organize joint scientific activities during the academic year 2024-2025 and open a joint electronic portal for the colonial period (1830-1962), beginning in the 19th century,” as well as “continuing periodic meetings between the two parties.”
The same source indicated that during this meeting, “a responsible scientific discussion took place, dominated by mutual respect and scientific acknowledgment of the historical reality that Algeria experienced under the yoke of French occupation, and recognition of the necessity of Algeria recovering what was plundered from it during the colonial period, especially during the nineteenth century, which was the subject of the dialogue.” .
