Installation of the committee charged with implementing the national plan for the protection and development of livestock division – Algerian dialogue

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development announced, in a statement today, Monday, the establishment of the sectoral committee charged with developing and following up on the implementation of the national plan for the protection and development of the livestock division (sheep, cows, goats, camels, horses) in order to preserve and develop the herd and breeds and enhance environmental sustainability. The inauguration ceremony took place yesterday, Sunday, at the Ministry’s headquarters, in the presence of the Secretary-General of the National Union of Algerian Peasants, the Secretary-General of the National Chamber of Agriculture, and the directors of public economic institutions, offices, and research institutes under guardianship, adds the same source.
This committee consists of representatives of the National Union of Peasants, the National Chamber of Agriculture, central executives, directors of scientific and research institutes under guardianship, as well as general directors of economic institutions and relevant offices, according to the statement.
This committee aims to preserve the herd and breeds and develop them quantitatively and qualitatively, by improving their quality, as well as enhancing environmental sustainability in pastoral areas.
The Ministry confirmed that within the framework of this committee, four axes were relied upon: updating the census to determine the size and quality of the herd by providing data in order to develop a plan for its development and growth, and a second axis related to nutrition, with the aim of ensuring a continuous provision of barley throughout the year for all the herd and facilitating access to compound and fortified fodder. The third axis is responsible for breeding that depends on genetic selection for distinct characteristics to facilitate the reproductive process and improve its effectiveness in the herd, while the fourth axis is based on the animal health system with the aim of strengthening veterinary control and criminalizing the slaughter of female herds.
In this context, the Ministry highlighted “the pivotal role of all research institutes under guardianship through their scientific and technical contributions in developing and implementing this national plan for the protection and development of livestock,” highlighting that the committee will expand to include representatives of the Ministries of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Vocational Training and Education, and Industry.
According to the statement, the Secretary-General of the National Union of Algerian Peasants appreciated the installation of this committee and all the measures taken that contribute to protecting livestock.
