Today, Saturday, at the Army Site Club in Ain Naadja, 1st Military Region, the Secretary-General of the Ministry of National Defense, Major General Mohamed Saleh Ben Bisha, supervised the launching ceremony of a multi-component exercise to enhance the capabilities of intervention in chemical emergencies, entitled “Chemical Exercise Africa,” directed to representatives States parties to the Chemical Weapons Convention for the African Region.

This regional event, hosted by Algeria in cooperation with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, will take place during the period from September 23 to October 4, 2023. It will be activated by national and foreign trainers under the supervision of international observers and evaluators. It aims to strengthen the response capabilities of African States Parties to chemical emergencies. It also aims to consolidate technical support to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons in the field of assistance and protection with regard to the use or threat of use of chemical weapons or toxic chemical products, while enhancing dialogue between specialists of States Parties affiliated with the various groups. African regionalism. In this context, the Secretary-General of the Ministry of National Defense stressed, in his speech, the pioneering role of our country in implementing this agreement: “There is no doubt that Algeria has worked, since its accession to the Organization, to strictly and completely implement the provisions of the Chemical Weapons Convention, and has played an effective role as a leader.” In the Executive Council of the organization to strengthen Africa’s position and defend its interests, which enhances its capabilities in various fields related to the implementation of the agreement.”

This exercise, which is the first of its kind in Algeria and in Africa, will include advanced training in the field of intervention protocols in the event of a chemical attack or accident, using advanced means of reconnaissance, detection, sampling, disinfection and health evacuation, in addition to implementing a simulation exercise for a chemical terrorist attack, activated by African intruders. .

For reference, Algeria participates in this activity through all the bodies concerned with this field, such as the People’s National Army, National Security, Civil Protection, the Ministry of Industry and Energy, and various research centers and specialized laboratories.
