Harvesting vegetables in the African Cup “Ivory Coast 1984” – News

Luck turned its back on the Greens in the only edition of the African Cup of Nations finals, which was hosted by Ivory Coast 40 years ago.

The Desert Warriors participated for the fourth time in the competition at that time, under the leadership of coach Mohieddin Khalaf.

A golden generation fails to give Algeria its first title

The Greens traveled to the Ivory Lands with a star-studded squad led by the duo Rabah Madjer and Lakhdar Belloumi.

They gained great popularity after their exceptional performance in the 1982 World Cup finals in Spain, where they defeated the tournament runner-up, West Germany, in the group stage.

The national elements began their journey in the tournament, scoring Malawi’s net with a complete hat-trick scored by Nasser Bouyish, Lakhdar Belloumi and Ali Fergani.

Djamel Menad’s teammates confirmed this result on the occasion of their confrontation with the defending champion, the strong Ghana national team, which they defeated with a brace scored by both Menad himself and Taj Bensahoula.

In their third match of the group stage, the Greens faced another stubborn team, Nigeria, who was able to restrain them and force them to a goalless draw.

Thanks to this result, the two teams qualified for the second group after reaching the fifth point, but with the advantage of goals going to Algeria, which took the lead.

The Desert Warriors will meet their Cameroonian counterparts, led by star Roger Milla, in the semi-finals in Bouaké.

Coincidentally, after 39 years, the draw for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations finals in Ivory Coast resulted in the same city hosting Algeria’s matches in the competition.

The scenario of Nigeria’s Greens match against Cameroon was repeated, after the match was tied without goals in regular and extra time.

The two teams decided to go to penalty kicks, in which the balance went to the untamed lions with a score of 5-4, after Mahmoud Kunduz missed the fourth penalty kick.

Despite the bitter exclusion, the national team was forced to play the ranking match three days later (March 17, 1984) against Egypt.

The state of frustration that prevailed in the national team camp at that time did not prevent the squad that faced the descendants of the Pharaohs from striving for victory, which was eventually achieved with a score of 3-1.

Meanwhile, the Cameroonian team did not find it difficult to overcome Nigeria during the final match, and won by three goals to one.

The Greens finished the 14th edition of the African Cup of Nations without defeat, unlike the other seven teams that participated in the tournament, including champions Cameroon, who lost against Egypt in the group stage.
