Fayed announces the preparation of a road paper to develop the statistical system – Algerian Dialogue

The Minister of Finance, Laziz Fayed, revealed today, Sunday in Algiers, the preparation of a road paper for the national strategy for developing the statistical system, including the preparation of an accurate diagnosis of this system.

In his speech during his presidency of the fifth regular session of the National Statistics Council, in his capacity as its president, Mr. Fayed stressed the need to “give importance and priority to preparing a road paper for the national strategy for developing the statistical system, with a focus on activation, coordination and cooperation between sectors in order to establish an integrated statistics system.” “.

He added that developing and revitalizing the statistical system will contribute to “making informed decisions based on facts documented with statistical evidence and achieving many goals, including improving the quality of life for citizens and enhancing the competitiveness of the national economy, as well as raising the efficiency of government institutions.”

Mr. Fayed also highlighted the importance of enhancing and diversifying statistical production and improving its quality by “reducing the resort to unofficial statistics, especially those related to sectoral statistics that help in planning and implementing projects in strategic sectors.”

He called for the necessity of “preparing an accurate diagnosis for the entire national statistics system while supporting its human and logistical resources,” and for relying on “transparency and working to facilitate access to statistical data through digital platforms available to citizens, researchers, and institutions,” stressing the need to expedite the review of the legislative framework. for this system.

The Minister considered the National Council of Statistics to be an essential pillar of the national statistical system to ensure the quality and efficiency of the national statistical system, as it is the body responsible for planning and organizing statistical work at the national level.

By the way, Mr. Fayed mentioned some of the achievements that the Council has achieved since its inauguration on October 20, 2021, especially the transition from the 1989 base to the 2001 base and improving the estimation of the gross domestic product and national accounts.

As for the Council meeting, which is considered its eighth session and the fifth regular session since its establishment, and which was attended by its members, it aims to establish an effective working mechanism to follow up and coordinate efforts to develop and adopt the national strategy for developing statistics and to review the legal texts related to the statistical system, especially with regard to Strengthening the Council by expanding its composition to include other sectors while considering the flexibility of procedures for appointing its members, the Minister adds.

The meeting witnessed a presentation on the status of the Council’s activity and its work prospects for the coming period.
