Canadian Ambassador: We hope to establish a “strong partnership” with Algeria – Algerian Dialogue

Canada’s ambassador to Algeria, Michael Callan, confirmed yesterday, Wednesday in Algiers, that his country hopes to establish a “strong and mutually beneficial” partnership with Algeria, pointing to holding bilateral talks with the Algerian authorities in order to renew bilateral agreements related to several sectors of cooperation.

The Canadian diplomat made this statement during a press conference devoted to his country’s participation in the 55th edition of the Algiers International Fair, which is scheduled to be organized from June 24 to 29 at the Exhibition Palace in Algiers.

Mr. Callan stressed “Canada’s desire to establish a strong, mutually beneficial partnership with Algeria and to promote common priorities, especially in the areas of regional security, trade, investment and human rights, in addition to cooperation in the cultural and scientific fields and combating climate change.”

He continued to say that Canada and Algeria maintain “distinguished” and “active” bilateral relations, adding that talks were held with the Algerian authorities in order to “renew bilateral agreements related to various fields.”

In this regard, he mentioned the visit made by the Speaker of the Canadian House of Commons, Mr. Greg Fergus, last April, which allowed for “frank and constructive talks” with the country’s highest authorities and representatives of civil society, which would lead to the establishment of a group Parliamentary friendship between Algeria and Canada.

The same diplomat continued to say that Canada intends to further strengthen its cooperation with Algeria, especially by expanding areas of partnership between the two countries, which this year celebrate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.

In this regard, Mr. Callan announced the participation of twenty Canadian institutions in the next edition of the Algiers International Fair in Algeria, after years of absence.

He added that these institutions, which will be gathered in one pavilion, have shown “a special interest in the Algerian market, where they intend to strengthen their presence.”

He also confirmed that, in parallel, the Canadian authorities are preparing, in early July, to receive an Algerian delegation of heads of institutions led by the Algerian Economic Renewal Council.

Addressing the level of economic exchanges between the two countries, the ambassador indicated that Algeria remains one of his country’s trading partners.

Finally, he concluded by emphasizing that trade exchanges had recorded a “significant” growth in the year 2023, reaching 1.5 billion Canadian dollars, adding that more than 100 Canadian institutions are active in Algeria.
