The President of the National People’s Assembly, Ibrahim Bougali, held a meeting devoted to evaluating the performance of the Parliamentary Network for Environment and Climate in the past period, while setting a future vision for it.
When he intervened during this meeting, which was attended by the vice-presidents and heads of parliamentary groups, in addition to the committee heads, Boghali explained that “the idea of establishing the Parliamentary Network for Environment and Climate, which was established on September 29, 2022, came as an inevitable result of the environmental and climate developments that our world is witnessing today, on the one hand, and of Algeria’s international commitments.” On the other hand, it forces everyone to rally around it and work relentlessly to achieve it.”
Bougali also urged the need to strengthen the parliamentary network nationally and internationally, calling for consideration of drawing up a comprehensive strategy that opens horizons for cooperation with the government and all relevant actors to implement environmental and climate policies through legislative and oversight work, thus making Algeria a pioneering model in the field of environment and sustainable development. .
The spokesman added that the issue of the environment and climate is not a local issue but also a global issue, highlighting that this calls for effective participation in international forums, support for agreements related to the environment and climate, and advocacy in favor of Algeria, which, along with the rest of the African countries, faces a huge burden in return for the major countries evading their responsibilities in bearing the losses. And the damage resulting from environmental pollution caused by its intensive manufacturing activities.
Boghali concluded his intervention by proposing to expand membership in the Parliamentary Network for Environment and Climate, by inviting new members who share the same vision and goals for protecting the environment, combating climate change, and achieving sustainable development, which forms the basis for establishing the network.
The representatives presented a number of suggestions and concerns, and their interventions mainly revolved around the necessity of delineating the vision and goals for the network’s work, with a proposal to organize field trips accompanied by officials of all relevant sectors to achieve what the network aspires to.
The stakeholders also urged to raise environmental awareness among community members by enacting laws that force respect for the environment. They also suggested working with experts and specialists in this field to come up with a road map for preserving the environment.
