Belmadi leaves his position

The Algerian News Agency announced, on Wednesday, the resignation of national coach Djamel Belmadi following the disappointing elimination of the senior national team in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations finals in Ivory Coast.

Belmadi told his players in the changing rooms at Al Salam Stadium in the city of Bouaké, after the Greens’ defeat by Mauritania with a goal without a response in the final round of the group stage, according to what the same source explained.

The official announcement after returning to Algeria

The Algerian Football Federation, led by its president Walid Sadi, did not publish any official statement on the matter.

Belmadi, in turn, hinted during the press conference that followed the match with Mauritania that the decision on whether or not to leave will be announced with the return of the national team’s delegation to the homeland.

In the same context, the Algerian fans present in Ivory Coast and in the city of Bouaké expressed their anger at the way the national team left the competition.

Some of them headed to the team’s residence hotel adjacent to Al-Salam Stadium, in order to protest against the coach and players.

The Desert Warriors ended their campaign in the 34th edition of the African Cup of Nations, without achieving any victory and with two points earned by the team in three matches.

Under the leadership of Belmadi, the Greens failed to win during their last six matches, as they recorded three defeats and three draws in the 2021 Cameroon and 2023 Ivory Coast tournaments.

It is expected that Belmadi’s career with the national team will end after six years he spent at the helm of the national team.

During which he led the team in 64 matches, which is the second highest number recorded by any coach after Rabah Saadane (72 matches).
