On Saturday, in Algiers, the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Kamal Badari, supervised the work of a study day centered on “University Sports… Reality and Prospects,” with the aim of giving a new breath to elite sports.

In his speech during the opening of this study day organized at the Faculty of Medicine by the Ministry of Higher Education and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Badari stressed that “the national plan for university sports makes university sports, its development and revival, an essential element in the field of creating a university sports elite.”

The minister added, “This elite sports team will give a new radiance to Algeria and make sports a significant element in students’ well-being in addition to academic success.” The national plan for university sports includes – according to the minister – “accompanying the Algerian Federation for University Sports in order to perform its duties to the fullest extent and make this sport a factor for community cohesion through students.”

Badari also announced that the start of university sports competitions with their various activities will be given on September 19, stressing that the step represents “the beginning of achieving the outcomes of the Council of Ministers meeting held last April 16, where the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, ordered the revival of university sports to form the elite.” .

For his part, the representative of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Mustafa Ali Hassani, pointed to the position that his sector attaches to university sports, as it brings together university students as an elite group in addition to allowing more interaction and cohesion between them.

In turn, the participants in the school day called for the Algerian Federation of University Sports to accompany the university sports as well as university institutions in order to raise the student participation rate from 4 percent to 15 percent as a first step, and to discover champions to direct them to sports clubs.

Those concerned also proposed creating a new structure that responds to the aspirations of student athletes, diversifying funding sources to expand accompaniment, setting an additional budget for maintaining facilities, as well as establishing centers and poles for preparing athletes.

They also stressed the need to create a basis for monitoring student athletes, prepare a basic law for this category, and propose a new model for promoting sports competition in the university community, in addition to reviewing regulatory texts and activating the role of the University Sports Federation.
