Yesterday, Monday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad, Ahmed Attaf, received the Director-General of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, Fernando Arias, who is on a visit to Algeria.
In a statement to the press following the reception given to him by Minister Attaf, Mr. Arias indicated that Algeria is an “active” country in the field of disarmament.
The spokesman said: “We have worked for 26 years to destroy all declared chemical weapons in the world, and we are completing this great mission this year. 70,000 tons of the world’s most dangerous poisons have been destroyed under the organization’s supervision, thanks to the support of its 193 member states, including Algeria, an active and positive disarmament country.”
The Director-General of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons also noted that he had the opportunity to speak with Mr. Attaf in a “very open and friendly” manner.
In this regard, he pointed to the convergence of views on the necessity of “working together to ensure peace and security in the world.”
Finally, Fernando Arias expressed his hope that Algeria would continue to play a “positive” role in the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons “to confront the great challenges that stand before us.”
