The Minister of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad, Ahmed Ataf, received today, at the Ministry’s headquarters, the Assistant Secretary of State for International Organizations, Michelle Sisson, who is on a working visit to Algeria.
At the outset, Sisson expressed, on behalf of the Secretary of State and the US government, her sincere condolences to Algeria following the tragic fires that afflicted some states of the country recently.
The talks between the two parties focused on the most prominent areas of bilateral cooperation and strategic dialogue between Algeria and the United States of America, especially the prospects for enhancing coordination between the two countries in various international organizations and bodies of common affiliation, especially the Human Rights Council and the United Nations Security Council. The priorities of the American candidate for membership in the International Court of Justice, Sarah Cleveland, were also reviewed in anticipation of the elections to be held on November 9 at the United Nations.
On the other hand, and in preparation for the visit that Minister Ahmed Ataf will soon pay to Washington, the two sides exchanged views on regional and international developments, especially the developments of the crises in Libya, Mali, Sudan and the Sahel region, as well as the issues of Western Sahara and Palestine.
In this context, the American official expressed the United States’ appreciation and support for Algeria’s efforts to spread stability and development in its regional neighborhood and at the continental level.
In conclusion, the two parties expressed their political will and unwavering willingness to consolidate consultation and coordination between them whenever necessary and opportunities become available in order to contribute to peaceful, negotiated solutions to crises, as well as revitalizing the role of multilateral action to face international challenges of a comprehensive nature.
