Algeria pleads for Indonesia on behalf of colonial countries – Al-Hiwar Al-Jazaeryia

In Bali, Indonesia, the annual symposium of the Special Committee charged with studying the implementation of the Declaration on Granting Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples opened with the participation of an Algerian delegation led by Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ammar Ben Jemaa.

This year’s edition is characterized by the large participation of delegates that include representatives of 17 non-independent territories registered on the agenda of decolonization of the United Nations, member states and experts in the field of decolonization.

As in the previous editions, many countries from Africa, Latin America, Asia and the Pacific will participate, to support and defend all peoples subject to colonialism in self-determination and their right to independence.

In this regard, most of the delegations present stated their adherence to the principle of ending the occupation emanating from Resolution 1514 adopted in 1960, which represents the cornerstone of the United Nations doctrine of self-determination.

A number of delegations also expressed their regret at not achieving the goal of ending the total occupation in 17 regions, while the United Nations declared the Fourth Global Decade to End the Occupation.

This conference, which will extend to Friday, is expected to remind of the importance of the principle of ending the occupation by working and pleading for the implementation of the action plan of the International Decade for the Liquidation of the Occupation, the doctrine of ending it and the United Nations resolutions in this regard.

The issue of Western Sahara will be at the heart of the committee’s deliberations, starting from the second day of the works. During the symposium, the countries supporting the Sahrawi cause that are present strongly, including Algeria, will reaffirm their strong support for the people of Western Sahara in disposing of their fate.
