Algeria condemns the policy of systematic starvation against the Palestinian people in Gaza

The Permanent Representative of Algeria to the United Nations, Ammar Benjameh, confirmed in a speech during an open session of the UN Security Council on the topic: “Protecting Civilians in Armed Conflicts: Food Security in the Gaza Strip,” that the situation in Gaza is alarming and the occupation’s treatment of the population is inhumane. Recalling what the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, wisely said: “When you lose your food security, you lose your dignity.”

Bin Jama said, “While the people of Gaza depend on humanitarian aid, the occupation uses starvation as a tool of war,” considering the use of starvation intentionally and systematically, “a flagrant violation of international law because it intends to push the people of Gaza into despair and loss of dignity.”

Regarding the suffering of the Palestinians in Gaza and the humanitarian crisis in which they are floundering as a result of the Zionist aggression, Ben Jama explained that by the beginning of last December, estimates from the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification indicated that by the end of February 2024, the entire population of Gaza – numbering 2.2 million people – will face levels of Serious acute food insecurity represents the highest level in the entire world.

The Algerian diplomat regretted that the efforts of humanitarian workers and the rare decisions taken by the Council did not improve the situation because a ceasefire was not reached.

In the same context, he warned that nutrition indicators in northern Gaza confirm that 15.6 percent of children under the age of two suffer from acute malnutrition, and it is likely that, in light of the data for January and February, the situation will worsen, especially in the northern Gaza Strip, which cannot Access it right now.

Also, 90 percent of children under the age of five complain of one or more diseases in light of a very poor diet. In addition, children, pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and the elderly face high levels of risk of death due to food scarcity.

The Algerian diplomat cited what was said by Palestinian journalist Anas Al-Sharif from Gaza, who said: “I woke up to the sound of children screaming because they were starving and their bodies were being devoured (…) Their cries broke my heart.”

By the way, Bin Jama’ described the death of the residents of the Gaza Strip due to hunger as a “bitter reality and a horrific dilemma” because they are forced between the risk of dying under bombardment or slow death due to hunger.

In the face of this terrible tragedy – the speaker adds – the international community finds itself helpless and desperate, highlighting that the current flow of aid is very far from responding to the required level, in addition to the fact that commercial activities are completely paralyzed.
