Rivers results in the group stage
Rivers United won a pass to the quarter-finals for the second season in a row, after being eliminated from the same round in the previous edition by the runner-up, Young Africans of Tanzania, with a score of 2-0 in the two home and away matches.
Rivers was accompanied to the quarter-finals by the Ghanaian Dreams Club, which leads Group C.
The two clubs scored 12 points, while one of the oldest clubs in the African continent was eliminated, namely the African-Tunisian club, which came in third place with a total of ten points.
The recent emergence of the two clubs (2009 for Dreams and 2016 for Rivers) did not prevent them from performing well in the group stage, as each of them recorded four victories.
USM Capital’s competitor succeeded in securing two consecutive victories in the last two rounds of the group stage, most notably against the Ghanaian team, taking advantage of the Tunisian club’s stumble, which lost to Dreams in the fifth round with a goal for nothing, then tied against Angola’s Academica Lobito in the final round.
The Nigerian club’s statistics show that it relied on direct play and tried to get three points in all the matches it played, as it won four and lost two.
His offensive line scored ten goals, while his defense conceded eight more, at a rate of 1.3 goals per match.
Rivers kept a clean sheet in two matches, the first in the opening round against Academica Lobito (3-0), and the second when it welcomed Club Africain in the third week (1-0).
