A Cameroonian international player was arrested for tampering with identity documents
The Cameroonian Football Association is facing a new scandal that adds to the series of management scandals that afflict the various departments and leagues that fall under its banner.
The official website of the football body, which is run by former player Samuel Eto’o, revealed the arrest of sixty-two players active in several clubs that qualified for the title playoff matches in the local first division league, which are estimated at 18 clubs.
They are led by international player Wilfred Nathan Douala, a professional at Victoria United, who was previously selected by coach Rigobert Song in the final list of the Cameroonian national team participating in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
The organizing committee classified him at the time as the youngest player participating in the tournament.
Cameroonian Football Federation officials discovered that Wilfred Nathan Douala had forged his identity documents, which indicated that he was 17 years old (born in June 2006), while he was much older than that.
A “dual identity” note was included in the player’s field on the provisional lists of players eligible to participate in the final tournament for the title playoff.
Douala was not the only one among Victoria United’s numbers who falsified his date of birth, as six other players face the same charge, which means it is impossible for them to participate in the aforementioned competition.
Wilfred Nathan Douala created the event on social media recently, after he was subjected to taunts by the African fans who followed the Cannes finals in Ivory Coast, which witnessed the exclusion of the “Untamed Lions” from the quarter-finals after losing to Nigeria with a score of 2-0.
Competition followers were surprised that the Confederation of African Football did not open an investigation that would prove the information related to Douala’s age, whose features show the opposite.
Samuel Eto’o has been seeking to combat such practices since he assumed the position of president 26 months ago. Last year, he revealed the attempt of some club officials to falsify the ages of their players who received call-ups to participate with the Cameroonian national team for the under-17 category.
